Why are you “all in” at MesserFit?

“I tried several gyms but could not consistently show up to make it worth my time and money. Once I started at MesserFit, I found myself making the work-outs a priority - often coming in on my own time to work on a move. The feeling of being accountable to myself was really empowering. I owe a lot of this to the MesserFit community. Seeing other athletes consistently train hard, getting stronger and hitting their PR’s, made me also want to succeed. In order to do that, I know I need to train like a MesserFit athlete - with consistency, grit, and dedication. It’s an awesome place to be a part of!”

Bobbi Sue

Determination and grit are just a few reasons why Bobbi has been selected as the MesserFit Member of the Month. Pair that with a super dry sense of humor, and it makes for a fun hour of training!

After competing in several Powerlifting competitions, Bobbi is no stranger to a consistent training regimen and lifting heavy weight. Thank you, Bobbi, for your energy in the gym and for making your training a true priority in your busy life!

“My motivation comes from several different things, but I think the most important one is for me. I feel great after I train. Even on those days when it is the last thing I want to do, I make myself show up. I am very busy during the day and some days are harder than others. But I always take the time to just show up for me. “

Will Michna

Congrats Will Michna on being chosen as the December MesserFit member of the month! Will is deemed one of the hardest workers in the gym. He crushes every work out thrown his way. Thank you Will for your positivity, hard work, and dedication. It’s members like you who help make our world go round.

“I train because I have seen great progress with my fitness goals. There is so much more I know I am capable of and want to learn. When I started, I never would have dreamt that I could do a handstand push-up, but now I am fairly efficient at them. For me, it’s not really hard to be consistent with something that I enjoy so much. It is now just a part of my morning routine and really helps me get my day started.”

What got you into exercise? I always enjoyed running 🏃🏻 , biking 🚴 And just physical activity in general. When I took the 6 week challenge at MesserFit I wanted to see how far I could push my weight loss goals. I absolutely fell in love with the trainers and atmosphere. This year I have really enjoyed listening to audiobooks as I work outside. My favorite subject is business or self development

Katie Burkhardt

This girl - always seeking out knowledge, always working hard, always pushing herself outside her comfort zone. Words cannot describe how much I have enjoyed training with you, Katie. Thank you for always being all in and making your fitness goals a priority, despite your super busy life.

“I’m all in at MesserFit because of my coach and the welcoming vibe the morning classes show. Since I have started training at MesserFit, I could tell my coach was invested in helping me succeed. I have worked with other trainers where I could tell they were not fully invested. My trainer at MesserFit has made it so I don’t want to miss, something I must schedule - even when I’m not feeling my best - because I know it will be what I need. My coach opened the door to powerlifting competitions, pushes me with cardio, and is always supportive.

I’m also committed to training because I want to show my boys that girls can be strong, too. I want to model my behavior in hope they will continue or want to start training, also.”

I have a co-worker that is going to college, working (over) full time hours, and is a single mother. She is doing great at her job and she’s getting straight A’s. From what she tells me her kids give her an A too. Her hard work and dedication are inspiring.

What do your own towards in your free time? In my free time I am hanging out with my family and learning about health self care tools.

Sarah Forte

Congratulations Sarah Forte on being nominated for the October MesserFit Member of the Month! Sarah is more committed than ever in her fitness journey, and it’s so inspiring to watch. Thank you, Sarah, for your consistency and dedication!

I’m all in at MesserFit because I want to look and feel great in my own body. Seeing how strong my body has gotten from day 1 to now is truly amazing and makes me want to continue to see how much more strength I can gain. My motivation and consistency is driven by how much fun I have doing my work-outs. Yes, they can be extremely tough, but I always feel great and have a good time doing it. I have come a long way in my workout/health journey and I’m doing to keep making progress and pushing my limits!”

What got you into exercise? I was not at all athletic when I was young, I worked out from time to time, but it wasn't until signed up for a random bootcamp class that changed how I viewed exercise. I had an inspirational trainer who made it his goal to make me an athlete, which was something I never thought I could aspire to. Since then I've been addicted to trying to do hard things and pushing myself to be better and stronger.

How long have you been training at MSC? Almost a year

What's your favorite exercise? Top three (because I can't pick one) clean and jerk, kettlebell swings, and deadlift.

What inspires you? Women in sports are just crushing it right now, in particular the women of CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting are inspiring to me. I wish I had these role models when I was growing up! It is awesome that it's now cool to be a strong woman who isn't afraid to lift some heavy weights.

What exercise are you currently working to perfect?  So many! Getting a pull up, snatch, cleaning up dubs and toes to bar, handstand push-ups.

What do you work towards in your free time? Try to keep up my musican chops, I play in multiple community groups on clarinet, bass clarinet, and tenor saxophone.

“Being a part of MesserFit is more than just a gym - it’s a family. We all count on each other! Being strong is empowering to me and my daughters. It makes me feel proud to set a an example that women can lift weights and be a badass!”

Kristi has been a perfect puzzle piece to our gym culture, authentically practicing encouragement, hard work, dedication, and dance moves (you might spot an occasional twerk between lifts).

What got you into exercise? I had a friend who tricked me into trying a TRX class 2.5 years ago.

How long have you been training at MSC? 2 years

If you were working out and ninjas attacked the gym, what top 3 items would you choose to defend yourself, and why?  I would first bore them with a discussion of the attributes of different COVID assays. Once they were lulled almost to sleep, I would have Nate chuck super heavy gym objects at them. Once they were pinned down and unconscious- I’d use my jump rope to tie them up. 1) I believe in working smart and 2) my jump rope would finally be useful and I’d have an excuse not to practice double unders while my replacement came in.

What's your favorite exercise? : Burpees!

What inspires you?: Watching my kids grow up inspires me. They make me want to be the best version of myself: to include living a healthier life and living by the golden rule (treat others as you would want to be treated).

What exercise are you currently working to perfect?: Double unders- unless ninjas attack the gym. Then it will be toes to bar.

How does your first work-out at MSC compare to your training experience now? My first workout was intimidating. It was so difficult and I didn’t know the exercises or any of my classmates. Now- I know the names of the exercises and my classmates.

You have been given an elephant. You cannot give it away or sell it. What do you do with it? I would put it in our basement gated bunny pen. Maybe the elephant will be able to teach the bunny to use the litter box.

A penguin walks into the room wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he there?  He says hola! He has brought margaritas! He seems like a nice guy...er...penguin.

What do you work towards during your free time? Define free time....most of my time is spent working or raising my four hysterical kids. They make me laugh. When I’m not doing that, I reupholster chairs and couches and I’m reading the Bible in chronological order this year.

Mike Cope

Let’s give a shout out to our January Member of the Month, Mike Cope! When asked to describe Mike, every MesserFit trainer had the same sentiment - He has a phenomenal work ethic and is consistently encouraging others around him - Both are highly valued qualities that we hope to see within our FitFam. Mike has been crushing his work-outs during the evening classes, recently snagging his first bar muscle-up. The sky is the limit for Mike, and we cannot wait to see what else he can do! Thank you Mike for practicing our gym values every single day. We could not complete our mission without members like YOU!

Name: Michael Cope

What got you into exercise? : I worked out consistently through life into my 40's. Now on the plus side of 50 I needed something. My daughter started working out at MesserFit and I liked her results so I tried the detox diet/work out plan and have stuck with it.

How long have you been training at MSC?: 18 months

If you were working out and ninjas attacked the gym, what top 3 items would you choose to defend yourself, and why? 1) I would throw Mark Messer in front and let him fight first, 2) Throw Kyle in front and let him fight second 3) If that didn't do it then the hidden cross bow.

What's your favorite exercise? : Power Clean

What inspires you?: Christ

What exercise are you currently working to perfect?: Deadlift

How does your first work-out at MSC compare to your training experience now?  I don't even remember my first work out. I do recall being surprised at the different elements and complexity of the exercises having never done them before.

You have been given an elephant. You cannot give it away or sell it. What do you do with the elephant? Eat it one bite at a time. That is the only way to eat an elephant.

A penguin walks into the room wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he there? Since penguin's waddle and don't walk I would know he is an imposter which means he is a Russian spy acting like he is from Mexico. That means he asks who owns the place I tell him Mike DeWine.

What do you work towards in your free time? Not much since all I do is work and work out. Other than that I am renovating part of my house.

What got you into exercise? I ran some marathons in the last 10 years and thought that was all I had to do to stay fit. Then I had knee problems and had to adjust my workouts. Then I saw the Facebook post about the six-week starter program with MesserFit. I signed up and haven’t regretted it since!

How long have you been training at MSC? It will be two years on January 1, 2021!

You were working out and ninjas attacked the gym. What top three items would you use to defend yourself, and why? If it’s 4:30am and I’m alone, first I’d crank up the 80s rock on Alexa as loud as it goes to blast their eardrums. Then I’d grab all the markers and pens and aim for their eyes. Then I’d grab the whiteboard and use it as a shield and run. But if it’s a little later in the am and Michael Franks is there, I don’t need anything. He would defend me!

What's your favorite exercise? : I like to jerk! Ha ha.

What inspires you?: Seeing people around me grow is inspiring. Whether it’s my students getting better at Spanish or my gym mates adding weight and hitting PRs, being a part of positive progress is uplifting.

What exercise are you currently working to perfect?: Toes to bar

How does your first work-out at MSC compare to your training experience now? For the first couple months, I used to be so sore I could barely get out of bed every single day. Now that only happens once or twice a week. Also, I finally learned how to spell PIGEON!

You have been given an elephant. You can’t give it away or sell it. What do you do with the elephant? I add it to my zoo...I already have 9 cats, 2 dogs and a bat. What’s one more? Maybe I can use it’s trunk for toes to bar practice...

A penguin walks into the room wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he there?  He’s probably here because he wants to live in my zoo too. Since he’s wearing a sombrero, he had better say, “Amiga, es hora de celebrar. ¡Vamos a tomar las margaritas!”

What do you work towards in your free time? I read in Spanish to improve my language skills. I take care of my animals. I need to be outside for my mental health so when weather permits, I work in my yard and garden.

If you were working out and ninjas attacked the gym, what top 3 items would you use to defend yourself and why? My legs, to run away. Human shield (likely Meg Smith for portability), to stop Chinese Stars. Chalk, to blow into their eyes (old school WWF style).

What's your favorite exercise? : Glute bridges while locking eyes with the nearest member.

What inspires you?: Sharing in the misery/fun of each workout with the 5:30am class.

What exercise are you currently working to perfect?: I need work on every type of lift, but focusing on cleans (of all varieties).

How does your first workout at MSC compare to your training experience now?  First workout I was very intimidated. I stayed on the Boot Camp side for a long time before gaining the confidence to work with the barbell. Now that I am using the barbell I have seen a lot of improvement and I love the challenges the CrossFit classes present.

You have been given an elephant. You cannot sell it or give it away. What do you do with it? I’m guessing it would be very popular at the elementary school I work at so I would definitely make the elephant my teaching sidekick...

A penguin walks into the room wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he there? “Yo quiero Taco Bell” -introduces himself as the new Taco Bell mascot (winter months only).

What do you work towards in your free time?  Being a better husband and father.

"Bicep" Bob Elmore!!!

I met Bob 5 years ago after his wife bought him a gift card for Christmas. With tons in common I lucked having the opportunity to train Bicep Bob. He always shows up ready to slam bars and set PRs. He's always upbeat. He's always forward thinking. He's a standard-bearer of everything we are about here at MSC.  Thanks so much for being part of the #MesserFitmafia

Name: Bob Elmore

What got you into exercise? : When my childern were young I wanted to be able to keep up with them athletically through participation into their adulthood. So I started out walking, then running, then weight lifting, and have stayed active over 30 year without disruption.

How long have you been training at MSC?: 5 years

IF YOU WERE WORKING OUT AND NIJAS ATTACKED THE GYM. WHAT TOP THREE ITEMS WOULD CHOOSE TO DEFEND YOURSELF, AND WHY?: I would ambush them with the "trap bar", soften them up with the "assault bike" and finish them off with "death by burpees".

What's your favorite exercise? : I love "strongman Saturday" because of the complexes that require strength and endurance.

What inspires you?: The variety of programming and accomplishing feats of strength. Mark is the best trainer I have ever had. He designs my programming to overcome my deficiencies while prividing encouragement and motivation.

HOW DOES YOUR FIRST WORKOUT AT MSC COMPARE TO YOUR TRAINING EXPERIENCE NOW?: My first session was max out on the rower. I was completely exhausted around 300 meters and thought I was going to die. Now I am a more fully developed athlete able to compete in crossfit and weightlifting competions, and stand on the winners podium.

YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN AND ELEPHANT. YOU CAN'T GIVE IT AWAY OR SELL IT, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE ELEPHANT?: Train it to put away my weights and equipment after the training is complete.

A PENGUIN WALKS INTO THE ROOM YOU'RE IN RIGHT NOW WEARING A SOMBRERO. WHAT DOES HE SAY AND WHY IS HE THERE? : I would ask, "why are you here?" and "what's up with the hat?". He would say, "I was told if you want to workout go to the "y", but if you want to develop strength, endurance and improve your conditioning, go to Messerfit"..."What? You don't like the hat?".

WHAT DO YOU WORK TOWARDS IN YOUR FREE TIME?: I like to work around the yard and boating in the summer.

Jen White

IF YOU WERE WORKING OUT AND NIJAS ATTACKED THE GYM. WHAT TOP THREE ITEMS WOULD CHOOSE TO DEFEND YOURSELF, AND WHY?: Rope - tie them up. Barbells - throw at their head. Butt machine - kick them where it counts. (Seriously I would send Steve and Mark to go first.)

What's your favorite exercise? : Pull-ups

What inspires you?: My girls. I want them to see how and why exercise is needed to be your best.

What exercise are you currently working to perfect?: Pull ups.

HOW DOES YOUR FIRST WORKOUT AT MSC COMPARE TO YOUR TRAINING EXPERIENCE NOW?: My first workout was scary, I tired easy and everything jiggled. Now I am confident, comfortable in the gym and with my trainer and a lot less jiggles.

YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN AND ELEPHANT. YOU CAN'T GIVE IT AWAY OR SELL IT, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE ELEPHANT?: Start a petting zoo? Or maybe ask it to paint art?

A PENGUIN WALKS INTO THE ROOM YOU'RE IN RIGHT NOW WEARING A SOMBRERO. WHAT DOES HE SAY AND WHY IS HE THERE? : Hey hot stuff, how about a margarita to cool down. He is there to steal my secret gym moves.
